A portrait model is your custom character: a reference face that APOB learns from so you can generate images and videos of that same person again and again. You create one by giving APOB a single reference image — either a photo you upload or a face you design with the built-in AI influencer generator — then naming it and training it.
What is a portrait model and why do I need one?
A portrait model captures one consistent character (you, a friend with permission, or an invented persona) from a single reference image. Once it's trained, you pick it in the workstation and every image or video you make keeps the same face. Think of it as the starting point for everything else — without a model selected, most generation tools have nothing to work from.
How do I create one?
Open the model creation page (for example via Train a new model / Create Portrait Model, which appears wherever you can pick a model).
Provide a reference image — either Click to upload image (your own photo) or AI influencer generator (design a face from scratch).
Type a Model name (required) and, optionally, a Description.
Decide whether the model should be Public.
Click Create your image model now.
You'll see "Initializing model creation…", then "Congratulations! Your model should be ready soon!" — the model then trains in the background.
What's the difference between uploading a photo and the AI influencer generator?
Click to upload image — "Upload your own image as your model's reference image." Use this when you have a reference of yourself or any character. The tile is labelled Create with reference: "Upload a reference of yourself or any character to craft your custom model."
AI influencer generator — "Use APOB's AI influencer generator to generate your model's reference image." Use this when you have no reference. The tile is labelled Generate ideal influencer: "No reference? Let us create your ideal influencer for you."
Either path ends the same way: one reference image lands in the Model reference image preview, and from there you name and create the model.
What makes a good reference photo?
When you start an upload, APOB shows a "Pick one photo of yourself" tutorial contrasting Good photos and Bad photos:
High resolution, not low resolution.
Clear face & background, not a cluttered face & background.
Simple composition, not poor composition.
In short: one sharp, well-lit, high-resolution shot with the face clearly visible and an uncluttered background gives the best result. You can reopen this guidance any time via View the Portrait Model generation tutorial.
Can I crop my photo?
Yes. The reference is a square (1:1) image. On desktop the uploader handles framing for you; on mobile, after a photo is in the preview, tap the scissors button (bottom-right of the preview) to open the cropper and adjust the framing to 1:1, then save. If you try to crop before the upload finishes you'll see "Please wait for the image upload to finish before cropping."
What is the Model name field and is it required?
Yes, it's required — the Create your image model now button stays greyed out until you enter a name, and tapping it shows "Please enter the name for your model." The name can be up to 32 characters. The field is labelled Model name: with the placeholder "Name of the model."
What does the Description field do?
The Description: field is optional free text (up to 512 characters, placeholder "Please describe your desired artwork here"). It's a note about your model and shows up when you or others view it; you can edit or add it later.
What does the Public toggle do?
The Public: switch controls whether your finished model is visible to other users or kept private to you. Turn it off to keep the model private. If you're on the free (Nano) plan and try to make a public model private, APOB prompts you to upgrade instead of switching — private models are a paid feature.
Why is the "Create your image model now" button greyed out?
The button is disabled until two things are true: you're signed in, and the model is ready to create. You'll get a specific warning when you tap it:
"Please enter the name for your model." — you haven't named it yet.
"Please provide an image for creating your model." — you haven't uploaded or generated a reference image.
"The page is not initialized yet." — give the page a moment to finish loading.
Once you have both a name and a reference image (and you're logged in), the button turns active.
Do I need an account? What if I'm not logged in?
Yes. Typing in any field, opening the uploader, or clicking create while signed out opens the sign-in dialog. You have to be logged in to upload, generate, and create a model.
Does creating a model cost credits?
Creating a model consumes your account's model allowance and may use credits, depending on your plan. There's no quality or output setting to choose on this page — you provide the name, description, public flag, and a reference image, and the exact cost (if any) depends on your plan, not on a setting you pick here.
Is there a limit on how many models I can create?
Yes — your plan caps how many portrait models you can have: Nano (free) 1, Micro 2, Macro 8, Mega 50. If you hit your cap, creation fails and APOB shows an upgrade prompt about reaching your model-number limit (the message and offer differ for free vs paid plans). See Credits, plans & billing for the full per-plan limits.
What happens after I click create? How do I know when it's ready?
After "Congratulations! Your model should be ready soon!", the model trains in the background. APOB associates it with a training task, refreshes your personal models, and (by default) moves you on to start creating content with it. Training takes time — the model shows progress and becomes usable once it finishes. If training fails, you'll be notified so you can try creating it again.
My image upload failed — what do I do?
If the reference upload errors out, the preview shows Upload failed with a Retry button. Tap Retry to try the same file again. Other messages you might see: "Failed to read the image. Please try again later." (the file couldn't be read) and "The file must be an image." (you picked a non-image file). You can also delete the image (the circle button at the bottom-left of the preview) and start over.
Using the AI influencer generator
What is the AI influencer generator?
It's a built-in tool ("AI influencer generator") for designing a brand-new face when you don't have a reference photo. You set attributes, generate options, then pick one image to use as your model's reference.
What can I customize in the generator?
The form gives you a Random shortcut plus these controls:
Gender — Man, Woman, or Secrecy (prefer not to say).
Age, Height, and Weight — sliders. Height and weight can be read in metric or imperial units.
Country and Country 2 — pick one or blend two nationalities.
Build, Eyes, Hair style, and Hair color — choose from options or type your own.
Dimple, Beard, and Suntan — on/off toggles.
Bespoke Details — free text for "unique traits, aesthetic nuances, or specific style requirements not covered above."
Some accounts also get an Advanced settings section with Prompt start, Prompt end, Negative prompt, and a Pose reference image uploader. If you don't see it, your account type doesn't expose those extra controls.
How do I generate and pick a face?
Set your options (or hit Random), then press Generate. Results land in History on the left; the placeholder reads "Your generation will appear here." Select a result to see it under Selected image, then click Select this image as reference image to send it back to your model as the reference. You can Recreate to tweak and regenerate, Reset the form, or Download a result.
Why can't I select the generated image yet?
The Select this image as reference image button stays inactive until the chosen image has finished generating. If you click too early you'll see "This image is not ready yet!" or "Please wait until the image is ready!" If nothing is selected, it says "Please select an image!" Wait for the image to finish, then select it.
Can I reuse the settings from a past generation?
Yes. Open a result's parameters ("Model parameters" / Use properties) to load that outcome's attributes back into the form — you'll see "Properties from the selected outcome are now in use!" Then tweak and regenerate.
Managing your models
How do I rename or edit a model later?
On any of your own models, open its actions menu and choose Edit to open Update model. There you can change the Model name, Description, Public status, and add a TikTok link and Instagram link. Make your changes and press Save (it stays disabled until something actually changes); Cancel discards them.
How do I add my TikTok or Instagram links?
Those live in the Update model dialog (not on the create page). Open Edit on your model and fill in TikTok link ("Enter your TikTok link") and/or Instagram link ("Enter your Instagram link"), then Save.
How do I make a model public or private after creating it?
Open Edit on the model and flip the Public: switch, then Save. As on the create page, free users are prompted to upgrade if they try to switch a public model to private.
How do I delete a model?
Open the model's actions menu and choose Delete. A confirmation dialog ("Delete model" — "Are you sure you want to delete this model?") appears; click Delete to confirm or Cancel to keep it. Editing and deleting are only available on models you own.
How do I use my model after it's created?
Once training finishes, your model appears in your personal models. Select it (in the workstation or wherever models are listed) and it becomes the active character for image and video generation. By default, right after creation APOB takes you straight into creating content with the new model.
On mobile
On phones, tap the reference preview to open the Select reference image sheet ("Upload or use our AI influencer generator"), which stacks the Click to upload image and AI influencer generator options with an OR divider. The first time you tap upload, the "Pick one photo of yourself" tips open automatically; after a photo is set, use the scissors button to crop to 1:1 and the trash button to remove it. The Create your image model now button sticks to the bottom of the screen as you scroll. The AI influencer generator opens as a full-screen panel with its controls in a slide-up workstation drawer.
